Meta tags, tagging 101. SEO

Meta Tags are key words within the HTML coding of a website or a blog. They need to be key words that are consistent to the content within the website. Remember content is king. If you are “spamming” your own code with irrelevant codes the search engine spiders will not enjoy that let alone with you be targeting your market. If your blog is about cookies and you have anything that does not involve cookies it may be detrimental to your page rank in the long run. It is like connecting the dots from the domain name, title, content and meta tags must all be relevant in order to hone in on your market. One thing to remember as well is not to over use a key word in phrases and such because that may be viewed as spamming by the spiders. My recommendation is not to use a word more than 3 times in all the tags per site.

meta tags and Keyword Research

When it comes to choosing key words there is several website that can help such as this siteand also doing your own research can help specifically if you are writing about a subject that you are an expert in. Nothing can beat the human mind (yet….) when it comes to what the people want in your field of expertise.

There are also meta descriptions as well. Again these must be relevant.

Your typical HTML code for meta tags always starts after the <HEAD> coding and ends prior to the last <HEAD>. In between the <HEAD> coding is the title and meta tags. Your attempt is to have the title and the meta tags be relevant with one another. If you writing about spruces do not put “sunflowers and spruces” because it may confuse the bots thus causing your page rank to be effected. Although a sunflower is a plant as is a spruce it will more than likely disappoint the bots and overdo it with bad meta tags it may be banned due to spam. Below is a picture of a sample of code. The words that are boxed in by red are the words that you change or change the phrase and/or description.

For blogs this coding must be placed correctly in each post. Meta tagging along with inbound links and well written content should help boost your page rank. For meta tagging and inbound links I have sources listed below.
